Requirements for Completing Stage 1
Students are expected to successfully complete Stage 1 (academic program at the International University, IU) to continue with Stage 2 (academic program at University of the West of England, UWE). Students should meet the following:
- GPA should be at least 50 and
- English requirements: IELTS Academic 6.0 (no individual band less than IELTS Academic 5.5)

- When am I expected to submit a certificate of the English language?
You should provide the English certificate at two different times:
(a) To meet English requirements for Stage 1 (the academic program at IU): You can submit the certificate during the freshmen orientation at IU. Otherwise, you are expected to take an English Placement Test. If you do not meet the English requirements, you can be placed in one of Intensive English classes. You can submit the certificate anytime during your study in the Intensive English program at IU to start Stage 1.
(b) To meet English requirements for Stage 2 (academic program at UWE): Students should hold an English qualification that was taken within the last two years as you apply for Stage 2 (Top-up year). The certificate must be submitted at least 01 (one) month prior to the date of the anticipated Stage 1 assessment (see the academic calendar of your anticipated assessment year; normally in July or August).
- To which office should I submit my certificate of theEnglishlanguage?
Students should submit an original or a certified copy of the certificate (with the original) to:
- Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs (A2.708) during the freshmen orientation
- Office of International Academic Collaboration (OIAC) (A1.614) after the freshmen orientation
- I have not completed the academic program at IU (Stage 1). Am I allowed to fulfil the requirements of Stage 1 as I am studying for Stage 2?
No. In case of students’ incompletion of Stage 1, students’ applications for Stage 2 (Top-up year) are not assessed.
- Can I start my Top-up year in Semester 2 or Summer semester?
No. Currently, the top-up year of the BA in English Language and Linguistics program at UWE starts in Semester 1. If you complete Stage 1 (the academic program at IU) in Semester 1, you can consider to study further electives or delay your enrollment in Semester 2. If the delay is approved, you should apply for resuming your enrollment at least 04 weeks before Semester 1 in the next year starts.
